At The Egress Experts, we offer two core services for Long Island homeowners: egress window installation and basement entrance installation. Both services transform underutilized basement space into safe, legal, and livable areas — and both are handled entirely in-house by our licensed team with over 20 years of experience in masonry and home construction. We serve all of Nassau and Suffolk County, handle the permitting process, and complete most egress window jobs in a single day.
An egress window is a code-compliant window large enough to serve as an emergency exit from a basement bedroom or living area. New York State requires any habitable basement space to have a qualifying egress opening — minimum 5.7 square feet of net clear opening, at least 24 inches high and 20 inches wide, with a sill no more than 44 inches from the floor.
If you're finishing your basement, converting it to a rental unit, or adding a legal bedroom, you need an egress window. If your existing windows are too small, cracked, leaking, or can't be opened in an emergency, those need to be addressed too.
What our egress window installation includes:
Site assessment and measurement to confirm code compliance before work begins
Permit filing with your local Nassau or Suffolk County building department
Concrete or block cutting and excavation
Window well installation where required
Window frame and glass installation
Waterproofing and drainage around the well
Final inspection coordination

Most installations are completed in one day. We work with the specific permitting requirements of your town — whether that's Hempstead, Smithtown, Huntington, or anywhere else across Long Island.

A basement entrance — also called a walkout or bilco-style entrance — is a separate exterior doorway providing direct access from your basement to the outside. It can replace or supplement a standard bilco door setup, or be cut into a foundation wall where none currently exists.
Homeowners on Long Island install basement entrances for several reasons: to qualify a basement apartment for rental income, to move large appliances and furniture without going through the main house, to create an independent in-law suite, or simply to add natural light and improve the feel of a finished basement.
What our basement entrance installation includes:
Custom design consultation based on your home's foundation type and yard layout
Excavation and structural opening of the foundation wall
Steel or fiberglass door and frame installation
Egress-compliant window installation where required
Waterproofing and drainage systems to protect against water infiltration
Permits and building department coordination for your town
Backfill, grading, and site cleanup
Basement entrance projects typically take two to three days depending on excavation scope and foundation material. Pricing starts around $12,000 and varies based on size, materials, and site conditions.
